How to Be a Friend Youth Sunday School Lesson

How to be a Friend

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 – "Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one  falls down, his friend can help him up.  But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him  up!…Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves.  A cord of three strands is  not quickly broken."

What do you think these verses are saying about friendship?

Friends can help each other, whether it be working together on a project, or helping each other cheer up after a tough time.

A strong friendship involves three people, like three strands of a rope; you, your friend, and God.  If God is in the middle of your friendship, your friendship will last.

Proverbs 27:6 – "Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses."

What kind of "wounds" might a friend have to give you?

Maybe your friend has to tell you that you were wrong to do something and you don't want to  hear it.  Maybe being told that you were wrong will hurt your feelings, but your friend is telling  you because they're your friend and they want what's best for you.  A friend will only say  something hurtful to you when it's for your own good.

Proverbs 27:17 – "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another."

What is this verse saying that two friends should try to do for each other?

When you rub two pieces of dull iron together, it makes both of them sharp.  It makes them  better.  In the same way, two friends should try to help each other to be better people.
