Praying through the Bible with Lindsey - Genesis 2

Read the Bible passage, then see the following prayer to take inspiration on how you might pray through this Scripture.

Genesis 2:4-25

(English Standard Version)

The Creation of Man and Woman

These are the generations
of the heavens and the earth when they were created,
in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground— then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

10 A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12 And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Cush. 14 And the name of the third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” 19 Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,

“This at last is bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.”

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

Prayer for Genesis 2:4-25

God in heaven,

4) Thank You for the reminder You created us all. Thank You that we can know when and why Your plan for our broken world is set in action.

5-6) When I was yet in my mother’s womb, still unformed, You prepared for my life in this world. You provided a future full of seeds of truth so that I could find You when my heart was ready. Your living water has always been ready and waiting in abundance for me. Thank You so much for caring even before I knew! Thank you for always having a plan for my life!

7) Not only do You provide a plan and nourishment for my life before I know I what I need, You GIVE me life. I was never truly living until You breathed Your breath into me. When You revealed Yourself to me, You promised to sustain me all the days of Your life. I know now that I cannot ever live without You breathing into me. You sustain me when I can’t sustain myself. Thank You!

8-9) You made heaven on earth for us, and we destroyed it with our sin. You weren’t surprised, and You were even prepared for it. You gave us heaven on earth again when You sent Jesus to teach us what heaven is supposed to look like. Then, when we destroyed Him, You left us with His teachings and Your Holy Spirit. Why are You so merciful?! We don’t deserve this, but I will always, always say thank You. Because of Your mercy, we have heaven on earth still. Your Holy Spirit guides us and helps us show Your beauty and goodness and to produce fruit for the sake of Your kingdom. Let us keep You at the center of our lives that we may see You always and be reminded of Your goodness and our purpose for living.

10-14) Continue to provide Your rivers of life and Your living water. The more I seek Your blessings, truths, and provisions, the more You grow me. I want to be fertile, to produce good things for You. I want to see You and hear You say I was a good and faithful servant.

15) You created us to work in Your heaven on earth. I am so grateful the mundane tasks I deal with every day are not done in vain. They are an act of worship to You, a means of expanding Your kingdom on earth. This sinful world is so crummy to work in, I’m so grateful You’ve given us meaningful work to spread heaven on earth instead of sin. Give us the tools we need to work in Your kingdom. Help me to plant seeds of truth in people who need to hear, water those who need to grow, and rejoice when the harvest has been gathered.

16-17) Protect me and my brothers and sisters in Your name from the temptation to leave heaven on earth. Continue to help us to trust that Your ways are better than our own when we can’t see it. I don’t want to take the broad way to destruction. I want life! Thank You for the mercy of warnings and gifts of escape from sin.

18) One way You’ve provided escape from sin is help from other believers. I am so thankful for the people You’ve put in my life to help keep me on the narrow path! My friends and family who believe in Your heaven on earth are such a help in my life. It is so comforting to know that someone else understands my life for You. I am so glad to worship Your name together with them. I know though, that if I didn’t have them in my life, I would still not be alone. You’ve given us Your Holy Spirit so that we are always comforted and helped. THANK YOU. I cannot imagine a life of true loneliness. I pray for those who do not have the Holy Spirit that You reveal Yourself to them. I pray for my friends that do not have spouses or friends to support them in their walk with You. I pray for the Christians all over the world who are suffering in silence for the sake of Your name. May they all remember You have sent a Helper and Companion.

19-20) Creator, You’ve given us the ability to name Your good works in our lives. When we fail to identify them as good, you still provide for us. You allow us to ask for more. You allow us to ask you for what we think we need. In Your mercy, You hear us, listen to us, and bless us. You always meet our needs even when we can be unaware of what we need the most. I’m so glad and thankful for this.

21-23) I think my greatest need, though, is You, Lord. I need You more than anything else in this world. You caused me to live in a place of darkness until I realized this. You worked on my soul until I was ready to awake to what You wanted to do in and through me. Thank You for not letting me stay in my loneliness and darkness. Thank You for letting me share my life to help others. I’m reminded of Jesus when I think about places of darkness. He took the dark rest of death on that holy Sabbath so long ago. Because of His death and burial and resurrection, we have new life! We have companionship forever! The slumber of His death, the shedding of His blood, promises us we will never be alone, and we will be whole once again. He gave His flesh so we could have new flesh. Forever. I’m going to stand in awe about this.

24-25) You gave me so much, and the only way I can repay You is to leave this world behind. Help me to leave my life of sin my ancestors have provided for me. I want to be one with You! I want You to be the place I run to. You promise that part of your plan is to marry us, to be bonded with us forever. I will be so glad when that day comes and we can stand in front of You with everything revealed, not ashamed of our guilt You took away. What a day that will be!
