1 Kings 19:21 Devotion by Stephen Taylor

1 Kings 19:21

So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.

The other day when I read this, the Holy Spirit said something like, “That is how we are to respond when Christ calls us and sets us free.” We can’t follow Christ without serving Christ, and we can’t serve Christ without following Him! They go hand in hand. We follow Him because of who He is. We have faith and security that only comes from a personal relationship with Him.

But how can we follow Him without serving Him and those He sends us to? We have to be willing to serve as He served. Not just when it’s convenient or in the spotlight but those times when no one knows but you and God and the person you are showing the love of Christ to! Those are some of the times, I believe, that we are the most like Jesus. Very in tune with His Spirit, because truly serving someone comes from a heart of love and self-denial, and who loved more than Christ? Who denied themselves more than the Son of God who became flesh to set us free?

Part of following Him is serving Him, and part of serving Him is serving those He sends you to. Trust me, I fail at this often. It’s easy to get distracted with things I want to do or busy with life, but we have to make time to show the love of Christ to those around us. Let us not serve for the spotlight but serve to shine His light in a world drowning in darkness!

Hebrews 13:16 - And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

God bless! I love you all! Glory, Honor, and Praise to Papa God, Jesus Christ our King, and the Holy Spirit!
