1 Samuel 29:8 Devotion by Stephen Taylor

1 Samuel 29:8

“But what have I done?" asked David. "What have you found against your servant from the day I came to you until now? Why can't I go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?"

This was David’s response to the Philistine king when he was told he couldn’t go into battle against the Israelites. The Lord showed me that a “no” isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The Philistine king tells him no, but what is really happening is the Lord is sparing David the heartache of being part of the battle where his best friend and the Lord’s anointed will die! This very battle he is denied access to is the very battle that could have changed his entire life.

David loved Jonathan deeply and completely. What do you think would have happened had David seen Jonathan in trouble or in need of help? He probably would have come to his rescue, and who knows if they would have made it out alive? We know that David both honored and respected Saul, the Lord’s anointed one, and I believe that if David had seen him wounded and dying, he would have come to his defense and maybe died with him.

See, the Lord knows the end from the beginning, and He knew David’s heart. That's why He chose him! He knew that David would choose to honor the Lord over himself and thus give his life for the one who was trying to take his!!

Sometimes, a “no” is really for our own good. It may not seem like it at the time or feel good, but we have to remember that our God is for us, not against us, that He is faithful and true and that no matter what it may look like, He is and will always be in control!

Proverbs 3:5-6 - Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

God bless! I love you all! Glory, Honor, and Praise now and forever to Papa God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit!
