Ezekiel 14:3 Devotion by Stephen Taylor

Ezekiel 14:3

“Son of man, these leaders have set up idols in their hearts. They have embraced things that will make them fall into sin. Why should I listen to their requests?”

Who’s altar is in your heart? Is it one you have built for an idol or one the Lord has built for His glory? This verse and the few that follow it grabbed my attention because I often view idolatry as something happening outside of the body, but in reality, it starts long in the heart before it’s ever seen physically.

We can worship these idols secretly for a long time before the fruit is ever produced for others to see. How quickly these idols can be erected and exalted, and our lives can fall apart just as fast. We are built to worship, but not just anything or anyone but God Almighty, Jesus Christ His Son, and the Holy Spirit. No more, no less. End of discussion.

But when we substitute the eternal Presence and loving relationship of God for a cheap knockoff, then we spend our lives trying to fill a void that nothing on this earth can fill. We chase money, cars, sex, status, power, and the list goes on and on, but the thing we are missing is that intimate personal relationship with our Creator!

We don’t move God to the center of our lives, but rather we need to move our lives to be centered around Him! He is God, and we are not. But we are His, and no one can take that from us. Search our hearts, Holy Spirit, and destroy, demolish, and desecrate any idols or seeds of idolatry that may be lying just below the surface or in the blind spots of our hearts!
