Needed: Modeling clay or play-doh
Hold a piece of modeling clay in your hand, and begin to work it and mold it in front of the children. Ask them to tell you who is in control of the shape of the clay. Raise your hand and say that you are -- you can make it into anything you want. Explain that the prophet Jeremiah said that God is like a potter, shaping the people of Israel into whatever he wants -- "Just like the clay in the potter's hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel" (Jeremiah 18:6). Ask the children how it might feel to be clay in the hands of God. Begin to make a smooth bowl with the clay, and tell the children that God wants to make all of us into something beautiful, but he expects us to cooperate with the shape he is trying to make. Invite them to guess what it might mean to cooperate with God, and suggest that this includes loving our neighbors, treating them fairly and avoiding evil. Remind them that God is in control, and like a potter God is always trying to shape us in a good way, but we have to do our best to fit this shape. Hold up your smooth bowl, and ask the children to behave in such a way that they are a good match with what God wants.
Sample Prayer: Father God, we know that You are in control of our lives and we thank You for always wanting the best for us. Please help us to work with You to make our lives what You want us to be. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
