Cheshvan is the second
month of the Jewish calendar. Historically, it is the month when the Great Flood occurred and the month for celebrating Solomon’s building of the Temple.

“The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the
earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only
evil all the time.” – Genesis 6:5
Lord, You see all
things. You see my sin, my selfishness, my brokenness. I’m not who You created
me to be. But by Your grace, You’ve forgiven me. And by the power of Your
Spirit, I’m being renewed.
Thursday, October 11, 2018 | Cheshvan 2, 5779
“The Lord regretted that He had made human beings on the earth, and His heart was
deeply troubled. So the Lord said, ‘I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I
have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move
along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.’” Genesis 6:6-7
You are a holy God who
hates sin. You are also a person who can feel disappointment and pain. I pray
that You would help me to become someone who brings You joy.
Friday, October 12, 2018 | Cheshvan 3, 5779
“But Noah found favor in the eyes
of the Lord.” – Genesis 6:8
Father I know that You
love me. Nothing can change that. But I want to be someone You can be proud of
as well. I want to live in such a way that You will look on me with favor. I
want to be like Noah.
Saturday, October 13, 2018 | Cheshvan 4, 5779
“Noah was a righteous man,
blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.” – Genesis 6:9
My God, help me to walk
side by side with you. Help me to maintain a righteous heart and to do no one
any wrong.
~Week 6~
Sunday, October 14, 2018 | Cheshvan 5, 5779
“Make yourself an ark of cypress wood. This is how
you are to build it…” Genesis 6:14-15
Father, give me Your
instructions. Just as you showed Noah how to build the ark, show me how to
apply Your Word to my life. Help me to be attentive to Your Spirit within me so
that I can do whatever tasks You would call me to.
Monday, October 15, 2018 | Cheshvan 6, 5779
“I am going to bring floodwaters
on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the
breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish. But I will establish my
covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife
and your sons’ wives with you.” – Genesis 6:17-18
My Lord, through the
death of Your Son, You have established Your covenant with me. I praise You,
for You have saved me from drowning in my own sin, just as You saved Noah from
drowning in the waters of the flood. Help me to bring my family along with me,
just as Noah did his.
Tuesday, October 16, 2018 | Cheshvan 7, 5779
“As it was in the days of Noah, so
it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating
and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the
ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until
the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of
the Son of Man.
– Matthew 24:37-39
Jesus, I look forward
to Your coming. I look forward to being with You. But there are so many who
won’t be ready. Help me to warn them lovingly, so that they, too, can welcome
You joyously.
Wednesday, October 17, 2018 | Cheshvan 8, 5779
“To those who were disobedient
long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being
built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, and this water symbolizes
baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the
pledge of a clear conscience toward God.” – 1 Peter 3:20-21
Gracious God, I thank
You for my baptism into Your family. I thank You for washing me of my sin
through Christ’s blood. I thank You for counting me clean and continuing to
work in me through Your Spirit.
Thursday, October 18, 2018 | Cheshvan 9, 5779
“You are to bring into the ark two
of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you. Two of every kind of bird,
of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the
ground will come to you to be kept alive. You are to
take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you
and for them.”
– Genesis 6:19-21
Creator God, how caring
You are to look out for the animals You made. Help me to remember that they are
Your creatures. Help me to be both thankful for them and respectful of them in
Your name.
Friday, October 19, 2018 | Cheshvan 10, 5779
“For the creation was subjected to
frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected
it, in hope that the creation
itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom
and glory of the children of God.” – Romans 8:21-22
How glorious it will be
when all of creation is restored to way You created it to be! There will be no
more death, no more violence, only the perfect harmony that You intended.
Saturday, October 20, 2018 | Cheshvan 11, 5779
“Noah did everything just as God
commanded him.”
– Genesis 6:22
Father, how many times
have I failed to do what You asked of me? How many times have I failed to obey
Your Word? Give me a heart like Noah’s, so that I carry out your will like he
did.
~Week 7~
Sunday, October 21, 2018 | Cheshvan 12, 5779
“By faith Noah, when warned about
things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith
he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping
with faith.”
– Hebrews 11:7
Jesus, give me faith
like Noah had. Remind me that there is a judgment coming and help me to do all
that I can to save those around me. Help me to recognize the sin of this world
and not to condemn its people but any actions and thoughts that aren’t pleasing
to You.
Monday, October 22, 2018 | Cheshvan 13, 5779
“But God remembered Noah and all
the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark, and He sent a
wind over the earth, and the waters receded.” – Genesis 8:1
God, I humbly ask that
You would remember me when I need You, just as You remembered Noah. Send Your
wind of change to blow in my life and give me solid ground to stand on. Remove
any obstacles in my path, so that I can serve and glorify You.
Tuesday, October 23, 2018 | Cheshvan 14, 5779
“If He did not spare the ancient world
when He
brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of
righteousness, and seven others, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials
and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment.” – 2 Peter 2:5, 9
My God, I go through
trials every day, and every day You are faithful to rescue me. Some of my
trials are like the waters of a flood, and some of them are like rain puddles,
but Your Sprit and Your saving power are with me through them all.
Wednesday, October 24, 2018 | Cheshvan 15, 5779
“Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he
sacrificed burnt offerings on it. The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in His heart: ‘Never again
will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every
inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I
destroy all living creatures, as I have done.” – Genesis 8:20-21
Holy Spirit, make me
life a pleasing sacrifice to You. I want to be someone whom the Lord sees and
is filled with compassion for the rest of humankind. I want Him to see me and
know that we are worth saving – not because of me, but because Your work in and
through me gives Him hope about what we can become.
Thursday, October 25, 2018 | Cheshvan 16, 5779
“I have set my rainbow in the
clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between Me and the
earth. Whenever
I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember My covenant between Me and you and all living
creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy
all life. Whenever
the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting
covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.” – Genesis 9:13-16
You are a good God who
continually gives us reminders of Your relationship with us. Help me to see
Your work in nature and remember how loving, how caring, and how awesome You
are.
Friday, October 26, 2018 | Cheshvan 17, 5779
“Long ago by God’s word the
heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the
world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the
same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for
the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. – 2nd Peter 3:5-7
Holy God, You promised
to never destroy the world with a flood again. But You are the judge, and Your
fire is coming. Help me never to forget Your standards and Your righteousness,
Your power and Your authority.
Saturday, October 27, 2018 | Cheshvan 18, 5779
“In building the temple, only
blocks dressed at the quarry were used, and no hammer, chisel or any other iron
tool was heard at the temple site while it was being built.” – 1 Kings 6:7
When Solomon was
building the Temple, he knew to respect You by keeping Your house quiet. Help
me to respect You in appropriate ways as well. Keep me mindful that You are
always near and You deserve to be honored in every action.
~Week 8~
Sunday, October 28, 2018 | Cheshvan 19, 5779
“The word of the Lord came to Solomon: As for this temple you are building, if you follow My decrees,
observe My
laws and keep all My commands and obey them, I will fulfill through you the
promise I gave to David your father.” – 1 Kings 6:11-12
My King, help me to
obey Your Word and follow Your calling. Make me a conduit to fulfill Your
promises of salvation and blessing to others.
Monday, October 29, 2018 | Cheshvan 20, 5779
“And I will live among the Israelites
and will not abandon My people Israel.” – 1 Kings 6:13
Holy Spirit, just as
You dwelt in the Temple of Solomon, so You live in me today. Help me to honor
You for the gift of Your Presence with me. I know that You will never abandon
me. I only ask that You keep me open to Your guidance.
Tuesday, October 30, 2018 | Cheshvan 21, 5779
“So Solomon built the temple and
completed it.”
– 1 Kings 6:14
What a great work
Solomon did to honor You! I don’t ask to be a great person, but if there’s
anything I can do to honor You, show me, and I will complete it.
Wednesday, October 31, 2018 | Cheshvan 22, 5779
“He prepared the inner sanctuary
within the temple to set the ark of the covenant of the Lord there.” – 1 Kings 6:19
Father, Solomon set the
ark of the covenant in a special place to remind the people of all You had done
for them. Help me to stay in Your Word and in prayer and among Your people, so
that I will always be reminded of everything You have done for me.
Thursday, November 1, 2018 | Cheshvan 23, 5779
“He placed the cherubim inside the
innermost room of the temple, with their wings spread out. The wing of one
cherub touched one wall, while the wing of the other touched the other wall,
and their wings touched each other in the middle of the room.” – 1 Kings 6:27
Holy Father, Lord of
Creation, Your Presence and the presence of Your angels fills every room! Help
me to feel You near me and to trust in the protection and guidance of Your
servants.
Friday, November 2, 2018 | Cheshvan 24, 5779
“On the walls all around the
temple, in both the inner and outer rooms, he carved cherubim, palm trees and
open flowers.” – 1 Kings 6:29
How wise Solomon was to
represent the beauty of what You have made! You created the heavenly beings to
help us, the trees to give us air and food, and the flowers to look on and make
everything work together.
Saturday, November 3, 2018 | Cheshvan 25, 5779
“In the eleventh year in the month
of Bul, the eighth month, the temple was finished in all its details according to
its specifications. He had spent seven years building it.” – 1 Kings 6:38
Lord, help me to be
patient and diligent in the work You give me, just as Solomon was. Whether the
task You give me takes seven years or 70, I only want to follow the details of Your
plan according to Your specifications.
~Week 9~
Sunday, November 4, 2018 | Cheshvan 26, 5779
“Jesus answered them, ‘Destroy this temple, and I will raise
it again in three days…’ The temple He had spoken of was His body.” – John
2:19, 21
Jesus, people used to
go the temple to meet with the Lord. I thank You that all I need to do is go
through You. You are my Priest and my Temple, my Savior and my God.
Monday, November 5, 2018 | Cheshvan 27, 5779
“The
God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and
does not live in temples built by human hands.” – Acts 17:24
God, You are not
limited by what we make or what our ideas of You are. You are the ruler of all
creation!
Tuesday, November 6, 2018 | Cheshvan 28, 5779
“built on the foundation of the
apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In Him the whole
building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in Him you too are
being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit. – Ephesians 2:20-22
Holy Spirit, though You
do not live in temples built by human hands, You’ve built a temple for Yourself
out of my heart. Continue to build me up in Christ, so that I can be a worthy
house for Your Presence.
Wednesday, November 7, 2018 | Cheshvan 29, 5779
“Do you not know that your bodies
are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?
You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. – 1st Corinthians
6:19-20
Spirit, make me mindful
of my actions. Make me mindful of my words. Make me mindful of my thoughts.
Help me to remember that I am not my own. I am Yours. You are living within me.
I am Your temple built to honor You.
Thursday, November 8, 2018 | Cheshvan 30, 5779
“I did not see a temple in the
city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.” – Revelation 21:22
My God, and my Lord
Jesus, I long for that day in the new creation when I will see You face to
face, when I’ll be able to meet with You freely. Help me to grow close to You
even now through Your Spirit.
