Praying through the Bible with Lindsey - Psalm 5

Read the Bible passage, then see the following prayer to take inspiration on how you might pray through this psalm.

Psalm 5

(English Standard Version)

Lead Me in Your Righteousness

To the choirmaster: for the flutes. A Psalm of David.

Give ear to my words, O Lord;
    consider my groaning.
Give attention to the sound of my cry,
    my King and my God,
    for to you do I pray.
O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice;
    in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you[a] and watch.

For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;
    evil may not dwell with you.
The boastful shall not stand before your eyes;
    you hate all evildoers.
You destroy those who speak lies;
    the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.

But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love,
    will enter your house.
I will bow down toward your holy temple
    in the fear of you.
Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness
    because of my enemies;
    make your way straight before me.

For there is no truth in their mouth;
    their inmost self is destruction;
their throat is an open grave;
    they flatter with their tongue.
10 Make them bear their guilt, O God;
    let them fall by their own counsels;
because of the abundance of their transgressions cast them out,
    for they have rebelled against you.

11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
    let them ever sing for joy,
and spread your protection over them,
    that those who love your name may exult in you.
12 For you bless the righteous, O Lord;
    you cover him with favor as with a shield.

Prayer for Psalm 5

1-3) Lord, it’s morning. It’s early. It’s a sacrifice to be up and praying right now. I need You to hear me though. I need Your attention desperately. You are the only one who can listen and take action, so I’ll wait and watch Your plan unfold.

4-6) I know when I sacrifice worldly things to be with You, I’m kept away from wickedness. Temptations to lie and be prideful are kept at bay. I want to dwell with You; I do not want to be destroyed by my bad habits. Seek out what sin in me I’m not yet aware of and destroy it so I can better focus on You.

7) Your love is abundant, and because of that, I know You’ll always clean me inside out so that I may be with You. I’m bowing at the feet of Your Son, Lord. He is the One who makes me clean. Your love for me is shown by His sacrifice for me.

8-9) The world is so tempting to follow. Could You make the narrow path obvious? I want to do good. I want to follow Your good, because the world has nothing to offer me. They only offer me destruction of my character, death to my soul.

10-12) I’m so grateful that in their rebellion, the evil with which they tempt us followers, will end one day. I hate that there will be those who will never know Your goodness, but I’m so glad evil will not prevail. Knowing in the end there will be none left to rebel against You makes me want to sing! Protect our fragile hearts that we may not be swayed to do anything but glorify You! Thank You for Your shield and blessings over me!
