Nehemiah 4:22 Devotion by Stephen Taylor

Nehemiah 4:22

At that time, I also said to the people, “Have every man and his helper stay inside Jerusalem at night, so they can serve us as guards by night and as workers by day.”

There are no days off in the Kingdom! As I read this morning, the Holy Spirit just impressed on me that this is a representation of our lives in Christ. We are to be all in, all the time. We don’t get to take days off because we’re tired, scared, or because we have worked for a bunch of days in a row. We are called to persevere and endure the path the Lord has laid out for us. We are to work and then guard what the Lord has given us!

There is only one way to accomplish this successfully, and that is to be completely surrendered to Christ. We absolutely will not make it if we are straddling the fence. The enemy that we face is cunning and crafty and is looking for any opportunity to attack. We must be on guard against his schemes and plugged into the True Vine!

One thing I enjoy and that encourages me about the Israelites rebuilding the wall around Jerusalem is that everybody had a part, and no one was called to fix it all by themselves. God is sovereign and could have just as easily spoke the wall into existence, but He didn’t. Why not? One of the reasons I believe is because He wanted to build much more than a wall. He wanted to build a relationship with His people and them with each other. I believe He wanted to teach them to rely on Him and count on each other. To be obedient and have faith that what He called them to, He would see them through! He was developing a community, not just a covering for the city!

God does not change, and that same God is doing that around our towns and cities today. He is saying, “There is much work to be done, and yes, I could fix it on My own, but I want to use you to share the love of Christ and help rebuild what the enemy has torn down!” Are you ready to serve the Lord and help in repairing what the enemy has torn down, or will you just watch from the sidelines? One of the things I have learned about this walk with the Lord is it’s not intended to be a spectator sport, so let’s all get in the game for His glory!

John 15:1-5 - “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.

You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me? I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me, you can do nothing.”

God bless! I love you all! Glory, Honor, and Praise now and forever to Papa God, Jesus Christ our King, and the Holy Spirit!
