Deuteronomy 14 Devotions by Stephen Taylor

Deuteronomy 14:23-26

Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine, and olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the Presence of the Lord your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you may learn to revere the Lord your God always. But if that place is too distant and you have been blessed by the Lord your God and cannot carry your tithe (because the place where the Lord will choose to put his Name is so far away), then exchange your tithe for silver, and take the silver with you and go to the place the Lord your God will choose. Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented drink, or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the Presence of the Lord your God and rejoice.

These verses are about tithing, but what the Holy Spirit pointed out to me this morning is that the heart and relationship is worth more to God than the silver or gold! It’s not about the money as much as it’s about the relationship! God doesn’t just tell them to bring Him their wealth, drop it off, and leave but to stay and rejoice and celebrate their offering with Him. If He just wanted their money, then why would He command them to convert their money back into livestock, grain, wine, or anything else that they could enjoy together in His Presence! It’s just another way our God shows us that relationship trumps religion and that He wants our hearts, not just our wallets. This is another example of how great and loving our God is!

The world around us wants the exact opposite; they want our money, not a relationship. The world wonders what you can give to it, but God proved what He was willing to give for you! Which one will you serve and honor today?

John 3:16-18- For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

God bless! I love you all, but His love came down to save us! Glory, honor, and praise now and forever to Papa God, Jesus Christ our King, and the Holy Spirit!
