Deuteronomy 9 Devotions by Stephen Taylor

Deuteronomy 9:1

Hear, Israel: You are now about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you, with large cities that have walls up to the sky. The people are strong and tall—Anakites! You know about them and have heard it said: “Who can stand up against the Anakites?”

This isn’t the most encouraging speech Moses could give them, or is it? If we look at this through our physical eyes, all we see is how big and bad the Anakites are. How fortified their cities and how impossible it will be to overtake them. But when we focus on God, those things start to get smaller and smaller, and eventually, those unclimbable mountains are just little ant hills we can step over.

All these things were true about the nations they were going into to take over and live in. They were big, they were strong, they were established, but they weren’t God’s! I feel like the LORD wanted them to know that He knew what He was sending them in against and wasn’t worried a bit. That He knew how big they were, but He is bigger. That He knew how strong they were, but He is stronger. That He knew how long they had lived there and how firmly they were established because He is life and is the One who establishes kingdoms and tears them down!

These same truths can be applied to us today; He knows the battles laid before us and is not afraid to go with us or worried about the outcome! Our God reigns before the battle, in the battle, and after the battle! Look how Moses, through inspiration of the Holy Spirit, responds to the above verses:

Deuteronomy 9:3- But be assured today that the LORD your God is the one who goes across ahead of you like a devouring fire. He will destroy them; He will subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and annihilate them quickly, as the LORD has promised you.

Thank You, LORD, for always being more than enough and forever faithful! God bless! I love you all, but His love will surround, sustain, and supply you! Glory, honor, and praise now and forever to Papa God, Jesus Christ our King, and the Holy Spirit!
