Genesis 19 Devotions by Stephen Taylor

Genesis 19:5

They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”

Genesis 19:9- “Get out of our way,” they replied. “This fellow came here as a foreigner, and now he wants to play the judge! We’ll treat you worse than them.” They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door.

The deeper we get into a perverted, sinful life, the stronger its hold is upon us, and the greater the desire will be for it. As I read this this, I was thinking about how these men probably didn’t start off with this bent towards homosexuality and sin, but as they dabbled in sexual sin and rebellion towards God, it grew and grew—culminating in this story right before the destruction of them and their town. The same can be said for our lives; maybe it’s something we feel like we can control or that isn’t a big deal, but the problem is that it is a big deal, and none of us can overcome sin on our own. We need help, and His name is Jesus!

All sin is sin, so, in a sense, there isn’t a sin that’s less sinful than the next, and they all (if left unchecked by Christ) will lead to death. I think of my addiction as a perfect example of this. It started out as some beers and smoking a little weed just to have fun. But what it grew into was a needle in my arm, heroin in my veins, and death at my doorstep until Christ called my name and set me free. My life was a gradual slide into more and more sin, and I believe that for the men in these verses, it was the same thing. They dabbled, it grew, and finally, it had a hold on them that they couldn’t break or didn’t want to.

Let us examine ourselves through the leading of the Holy Spirit and the Scriptures and put to death anything that doesn’t line up with them. Jesus came to set us free from sin, not to live freely in sin. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us and lead us in You this day!

Matthew 1:21- “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus because He will save His people from their sins.”

Romans 6:16- Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.

God bless! I love you all, but His love saves! Glory, honor, and praise now and forever to Papa God, Jesus Christ our King, and the Holy Spirit!
