Genesis 34 Devotions by Stephen Taylor

Genesis 34:1,2

Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land. When Shechem, son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and raped her.

This was a lewd and disgusting sin committed against Dinah, but could it have been avoided? Jacob was told by the Lord to return home, but instead of going all the way to Bethel, Jacob stopped outside of Shechem and pitched his tent there. They should have never stopped and stayed there, and Jacob’s sin had consequences for himself and those around him.

God’s plan wasn’t for this rape to happen but for Jacob to be obedient and go home, not stop where he wanted. Half obedience is no obedience at all! When we put ourselves and our families in places and situations we were never intended to be, bad things can happen. Does this excuse what Hamor did? Absolutely not, but we can’t control other people – only ourselves. We must be obedient to the Lord regardless of what our flesh or this world says or does.

This world tells us to do what we want; it’s our life, but we see in this story that Jacob’s sinful and selfish decision had immense consequences for both his family and those around him. If we belong to God, we are not our own; we were bought with the highest price ever paid, the life of the Son of God! So, with that in mind, let’s live a life of humble obedience and reverence to our God that says thank you for saving a wretch like me!

1 Corinthians 6:19,20- Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

God bless! I love you all, but His love changes everything! Glory, honor, and praise now and forever to Papa God, Jesus Christ our King, and the Holy Spirit!
