Luke 1 Devotions by Stephen Taylor

Luke 1:34-36

“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy One to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth, your relative, is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month.”

Different ends of the spectrum, but God displays His awesome power in both! One young virgin and one old barren womb, yet our God is not limited by age or circumstance. I see two different types of people and problems that we still face today. Mary the young virgin, inexperienced and in way over her head. She is now called to step out in faith and walk a path that would seem crazy or impossible to most of the people around her. But God has called her to it, and she will do it!

Then we have Elizabeth, way past her prime and far beyond childbearing age. Because she was barren, she probably lived a life of obscurity and maybe even shame. (To be barren in this society meant either that something was wrong with you or that you had sinned and fallen out of favor with God). Yet God has made her a promise, and she won’t look at this through eyes of reason but through eyes of faith!

At different times in our walk with the Lord, we can be one or the other. We can be the ones called out into uncharted territory, unsure how it will go but knowing that God’s got us. Or we can the one who looks back at their past and says, “I know what I used to be and how the world may view me, but my God still reigns, and I’m a new creation in Him!”

Be like Mary, be like Elizabeth, be whoever God has called you to be in Him! Just never forget the verse that follows the ones above:

Luke 1:37- “For nothing will be impossible with God.”

God bless! I love you all, but His love is unimaginable power and life-changing! Glory, honor, and praise now and forever to Papa God, Jesus Christ our King, and the Holy Spirit!
