2 Kings 16 Devotions by Stephen Taylor

2 Kings 16:2,3

Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem sixteen years. Unlike David his father, he did not do what was right in the eyes of the LORD his God. He followed the ways of the kings of Israel and even sacrificed his son in the fire, engaging in the detestable practices of the nations the LORD had driven out before the Israelites.

David was a flawed man. David was a man who sinned and was not perfect by any means, but David was a repentant man who chased God, not idols! These are two of the qualities that made David so special to God. Our God doesn’t require us to be sinless, but He does require us to repent when we sin and to serve and chase Him alone.

David was a God chaser; are we? God wanted a man after His own heart. To me, this is God saying, “I want someone who wants Me more than anything and desires what I desire. A man who will seek his shelter in Me even after he sins. A man who will not prostitute himself to idols but will serve the only Living God for all of his life. A man who would rather be boldly broken before Me than to be whole and stand without Me. A man who repents when confronted with his sin, not rebels against what I have decreed!”

David was sold out for the Lord despite his flaws, flesh, and sins; are we? There are many things in this world vying for our attention and affections, but as Jesus said, only one thing is truly necessary, Him! So today, will we chase the God who paid it all, or chase the wanna-be god who tried to destroy it all? What you and I chase, we will serve, so choose wisely.

Acts 13:22- After removing Saul, He made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’

Galatians 5:16,17- So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.

God bless! I love you all, but His love broke the grave! Glory, honor, and praise now and forever to Papa God, Jesus Christ our King, and the Holy Spirit!
