Matthew 19 Devotions by Stephen Taylor

Matthew 19:6

“So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Jesus is specifically talking about earthly marriage, but I believe there are spiritual undertones. God takes marriage seriously, and one of the reasons is because it’s a direct representation of Christ’s marriage to His Bride, the Church.

So, if God is this serious about earthly marriage, how much more would He be about the Heavenly one? Since we know that He takes this Heavenly marriage so seriously, then why are we so quick to separate the Bride into sections and thus create divisions in Christ’s Bride, a thing that should never be done? We say, “I’m a Wesleyan,” or “I’m Reformed,” “I’m a Republican Christian,” or “I’m a Democratic one.” When we say and believe these things, we are not only saying that we are right but that everyone else is wrong. How prideful we are to think our doctrine is perfect and that our specific one is the only correct one. The truth of the matter is that no one has it completely figured out. Each denomination has things they are right about and things they are wrong about, and only God truly knows what those are.

The enemy doesn’t have to work as hard against the Body when the Body is dividing and destroying itself. Think about that! When we divide up into denominations, we’re not just dividing our beliefs but our witness, our purpose, our influence, our reach, and our resources. We all should have beliefs based on the truth of God’s Word, but what we shouldn’t have is divisions over these beliefs. The feet need the hands, and the hands need the feet. There is no division in Christ, so why is there division in His Bride?

John 17:22,23- “I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”

God bless! I love you all, but His love is undivided! Glory, honor, and praise now and forever to Papa God, Jesus Christ our King, and the Holy Spirit!

Matthew 19:20-22

“All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?” Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in Heaven. Then come, follow me.” When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.

Christ’s call for this man and us is not that we be sinlessly perfect but that we be complete in Him! The word perfect in this verse and others like it means to be complete, not perfect in the sense we understand it but all in one or completeness. You see, this man, like many of us, had a divided heart. He had set up two thrones in his heart, one for wealth and the other for God. But our God does not compete with anything or anyone, nor should He. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the Creator of all things and Redeemer of our souls! There is nothing in this world that even comes close to the magnitude of our God and all that He is!

Christ is telling this man and us that we must dethrone that which we have exalted and humble ourselves before the Lord in reverent submission and obedience in order to have eternal life in Him. He is teaching that to have two gods is no better than having none.

When our loyalties are divided between Christ and anything, we are subject to be divided from Christ. He is a righteous and jealous God, and after all, shouldn’t He be? The price for our souls was higher than the mountains; it cost Him so deeply, even deeper than the deepest of seas. And yet our God went willingly, not forced or coerced but subjected Himself to the torturous death on the cross and the bearing of our sins, all the while knowing that many would reject the very thing He was suffering and paying for.

So today, let’s dethrone anything that we have exalted and humbly repent in heartfelt worship to Him! He is worthy, and He is waiting!

Isaiah 6:1-3- In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above Him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”

God bless! I love you all, but His love is unstoppable! Glory, honor, and praise now and forever to Papa God, Jesus Christ our King, and the Holy Spirit!

Matthew 19:23-26

Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone rich to enter the kingdom of God.” When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Jesus isn’t teaching us that all rich people go to Hell but that with God, all people can be saved! He is teaching us that there is hope for the hopeless, that no one is too far gone for Him to save! Society will write people off, but if they come to Christ, He will write their names in His book of life.

What a contrast between the way the world views the lost and how our King does. These verses are meant to instill hope in our hearts, to help us see the heart of Christ and how putting anything on the throne besides Him will cost us.

How sad it is that so many people think that they are too far gone to be helped or that their situation can never change. The enemy has convinced them of things like: “This is just how God made me” or that they “are stuck that way.” That, my friends, is a lie straight from Hell! He tells them not to focus or look to the cross because he knows there is freedom there. So instead of looking up to the Lord, they look down in defeated indifference and disgust at who they are and what they have become. All the while, Christ is standing there with salvation, healing, hope, acceptance, love, and transformation in His outstretched hand! That is why we must share Him and all that He is!

We have a hope and a future because Jesus Christ died for our sins, and then God raised Him to life with victory in hand and the enemy under His feet. We must never write ourselves or anyone else off, for who would have thought Saul would have ever been converted to Paul? No one but God! He knew, He moved, and He brought beauty from the ashes. Who around you needs to know about the Author of Truth today?

1 Timothy 1:13,14- Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.

(Holy Spirit inspired Paul to write that)

God bless! I love you all, but His love makes all things possible! Glory, honor, and praise now and forever to Papa God, Jesus Christ our King, and the Holy Spirit!
