Mark 7 Devotions by Stephen Taylor

Mark 7:31,32

Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. There some people brought to Him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged Jesus to place His hand on him.

We must never underestimate the power of interceding for those around us. This story never speaks of the man’s faith. Jesus doesn’t commend him on his faith nor even reference it. But we see that those around him believed in Jesus enough to get him there and “begged” Jesus to move, and He did!

What’s interesting about this man is he is both deaf and mostly mute, so he could not hear the Gospel nor profess his faith, and yet he is healed. What does this teach us? It teaches us that God can move even when we can’t! That He can have mercy and heal us even when we’re not looking for Him. It tells us that those around us who can’t or won’t cry out to the Lord can be healed and delivered by the mercy of God, spurred on by the intercessory prayers of others. It teaches us that those who can’t or won’t hear the truth can still be set free by the King of Glory!

So, for those of us who have lost family members, DO NOT STOP PRAYING! Hold fast to the hope He has given you and persevere in prayer. It is not that our prayers are magical but that our God is merciful and mighty! He wishes none shall perish but that all would come to repentance. This does not mean that God has to move in this way, but it gives us hope that He can, and He has moved this way in the past.

One more thing: this happened in a Gentile region, not a Jewish nation, telling us that this healing is available to all! Jesus Christ is Lord of all and gives Himself away! He is available today. Will you go to Him? Will you take those lost people in your lives to His feet? This man probably didn’t know who Jesus was until Jesus healed him and set him free, but I bet the man served the Lord from that point forward, and this could happen again today!

Mark 7:33-37- After He took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put His fingers into the man’s ears. Then He spit and touched the man’s tongue. He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”). At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly. Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more He did so, the more they kept talking about it. People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

God bless! I love you all, but His love moves even when we don’t! Glory, honor, and praise now and forever to Papa God, Jesus Christ our King, and the Holy Spirit!
