Psalm 56 Devotions by Stephen Taylor

Psalm 56:1,2

For the director of music. To the tune of “A Dove on Distant Oaks.” Of David. A miktam. When the Philistines had seized him in Gath.

Be merciful to me, my God, for my enemies are in hot pursuit; all day long they press their attack. My adversaries pursue me all day long; in their pride many are attacking me.

Have you ever felt like this? No matter where you go, no matter what you do you are under attack. From the time you wake up till you go to bed, constant turmoil and anguish from the attacks of your enemy? Unable to get ahead because your enemy is constantly dragging you back? Well, be encouraged because I’m sure David, like us, felt this both in the physical and spiritual realms. Yet look at his response to the above verses:

Psalm 56:3,4- When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise— in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?

David does not despair because his hope, his trust, his life is in the LORD! What about ours, where is our hope found, our trust placed, and our life hidden? If it’s anything less than Jesus Christ, we are doomed to fail and fall victim to these attacks. We cannot hope to overcome them without the King of Glory! He is our victory and the only Way from death to life, from defeated to delivered, from rejected to redeemed!

We must follow David’s example. Acknowledge the attacks but do not fear them; instead, take them to the LORD with bold yet humble confidence in His great love, power, and faithfulness! David’s life was not easy, nor was he perfect, yet time after time, we see him run to the LORD and find what he was looking for.

Will we take a page out of his playbook and run to the only One who can deliver us from all that assails us? Or will we stay stubborn and stuck in our mess, lamenting in the attacks that surround us? Our God has called us to live a life of freedom, not free to live a life any which way that we want but to live a life of freedom in Him and for His glory! So today let’s lay it before the LORD and wait for Him to move!

Psalm 55:16-18- As for me, I call to God, and the LORD saves me. Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and He hears my voice. He rescues me unharmed from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me.

God bless! I love you all, but His love is victory! Glory, honor, and praise now and forever to Papa God, Jesus Christ our King, and the Holy Spirit!
