Jeremiah 3 Devotions by Stephen Taylor

Jeremiah 3:9-11

“Because Israel’s immorality mattered so little to her, she defiled the land and committed adultery with stone and wood. In spite of all this, her unfaithful sister Judah did not return to me with all her heart, but only in pretense,” declares the LORD. The LORD said to me, “Faithless Israel is more righteous than unfaithful Judah.”

This is an amazing truth and one we must strive to understand. The LORD is teaching us a very important truth here; hypocritical and superficial repentance and reverence are disgusting in His sight. We see that Israel flat-out rebelled and rejected the LORD, but Judah tried to play church, and God wasn’t having it. He says that the one who has no faith is more righteous than the one who just pretends to have faith but inwardly is still just as wicked. He is teaching us that fence-riding is worse than unbelief.

To know the good we should do and not do it is sin; it is a flame that will eventually consume us but to pretend to be righteous or repentant while holding fast to that sin is like adding fuel to that fire. Jesus Himself has the harshest words for those who knew better and used their position as a means to sin, oppress, and destroy. He did not play well with the people of His day who decided their religion would be a show for the world around them to get what they wanted.

Our God does not condone any sin, and He certainly does not put up with those claiming to be His, all the while serving His enemy. Their time will come, and it will come swiftly and severely, but thanks be to God who gives us the victory and freedom from this in Jesus Christ. For we all have fallen short of God’s glorious standard, and yet He welcomes us with open arms! So today, whether you have been faithless like Israel or unfaithful like Judah, truly turn from your sins and into the open arms of love, mercy, and grace that await you!

Jeremiah 3:12,13- “Go, proclaim this message toward the north: “’Return, faithless Israel,’ declares the LORD, ‘I will frown on you no longer, for I am faithful,’ declares the LORD, ‘I will not be angry forever. Only acknowledge your guilt— you have rebelled against the LORD your God, you have scattered your favors to foreign gods under every spreading tree, and have not obeyed me,’” declares the LORD.

God bless! I love you all, but His love is willing to cleanse you today. Will you come and be cleansed? Glory, honor, and praise now and forever to Papa God, Jesus Christ our King, and the Holy Spirit!
