Jeremiah 16 Devotions by Stephen Taylor

Jeremiah 16:1,2

Then the word of the LORD came to me: “You must not marry and have sons or daughters in this place.”

These verses may seem a little harsh or unfair. Why wouldn’t God want Jeremiah to have a family? If God is love, then why would He command him not to marry and have children? The answer to these questions and the truth about God’s heart in this matter rests in the next couple verses.

Jeremiah 16:3,4- For this is what the LORD says about the sons and daughters born in this land and about the women who are their mothers and the men who are their fathers: “They will die of deadly diseases. They will not be mourned or buried but will be like dung lying on the ground. They will perish by sword and famine, and their dead bodies will become food for the birds and the wild animals.”

There was punishment and exile coming upon the nation of Israel and the land itself. There was going to be great loss, unrest, and turmoil. So God said no, not to punish Jeremiah but to protect him from all this loss.

Sometimes, God’s “no” isn’t a punishment but protection. When God says no, it’s for our own good. Imagine if Jeremiah had taken a wife and had kids, how much harder a journey it would have been for him. To watch all those he loved be carried away by death or exile.

Our God is a merciful and compassionate God. In those times He tells us no, we must remember that truth, for the enemy wants you to think God says no for many untrue reasons, when in all reality, the No is for our own good.

So today, if God has told you no in an area, it is for your own good and for His glory. Not every no is a punishment. Trust in the One who willing went to the cross to determine the course of your life! This will not be easy, but it is possible, for everything is possible for those who believe!

Mark 9:22-24- “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” “‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes. Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

God bless! I love you all, but His love said no when He was asked to give us up! Praise, glory, and honor now and forever to Papa God, Jesus Christ our King, and the Holy Spirit!
