Jeremiah 9 Devotions by Stephen Taylor

Jeremiah 9:23,24

This is what the LORD says: “Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares the LORD.

Do you have the understanding to know Him, that He is the LORD, and do you know His heart and character? It amazes me that we are even allowed to know Him, that He wants us to know who He is and what He is about.

Here we see Him name three of His traits: kindness, justice, and righteousness. All three of these are important and true, but I find it fascinating that He would name kindness before them all. But why? I believe it’s because He wants us to know His heart, for His kindness is meant to lead us to repentance (Romans 2:4). This teaches us that God desires to forgive and pardon more than He desires to punish and reject. Though destruction was our destiny, God stepped in and paid the price, opening the way from death to life through the blood of Christ!

This also teaches us that God can be both righteous and kind at the same time; can we? Do we ever lose sight of one while chasing the other? I have, at times, leaned to far towards the Law and too far from grace, but that’s not what our God does, and how grateful I am that He is who He says He is! For He is able to both pardon my sin and call me His son, not because of who I am but because of whose Christ says I am.

These verses also teach us that the things man boasts about pale in comparison to our God. For He is above and beyond, yet available to all! Lord, please give us the understanding to know You, while equipping us with Your Spirit to walk humbly and reverently before You!

Micah 6:8- He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

God bless! I love you all, but His love is perfect, righteous, and eternal! Glory , honor, and praise now and forever to Papa God, Jesus Christ our King, and the Holy Spirit!
