What Does God Look Like? Physical Descriptions of God in the Bible

God is Spirit (John 4:24) and. as such, can be invisible or visible and can manifest Himself in different ways.

Revelation chapters 4 and 5 provide us with the clearest picture of Heaven in the Bible. Jesus invites the Apostle John up to the throne of God and there, he sees God in all His glory. The description that John gives of God in Revelation 4:3 is very much like that of Ezekiel 1:26-28.

Revelation 4:3And the One who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian. A rainbow, resembling an emerald, encircled the throne.

Ezekiel 1:26-28 –Above the expanse over their heads was what looked like a throne of sapphire, and high above on the throne was a figure like that of a man. 27 I saw that from what appeared to be His waist up He looked like glowing metal, as if full of fire, and that from there down He looked like fire; and brilliant light surrounded Him. 28 Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around Him. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. When I saw it, I fell facedown, and I heard the voice of one speaking.

Taking the two descriptions together, we can say that:

  • God’s throne is probably made of sapphire (Ezekiel 1:26).

  • God’s basic form is that of a man (Ezekiel 1:26).
  • He is brightly colored from the waist up, like glowing metal (Ezekiel 1:26) or brightly colored jewels, such as jasper and carnelian (Revelation 4:3).

As we can see, glowing metal with the red and orange does look quite a bit like the red and orange jewels, jasper and carnelian.

  • From the waist down, He is like fire (Ezekiel 1:27).
  •  And there is an emerald-colored rainbow surrounding His throne (Ezekiel 1:28; Revelation 4:3).
