David and Goliah Youth Bible Study

Brief: Trust in God and know that He can help you accomplish anything.

(Printable Student Sheet)

Intro Question
What is one hard thing that you’ve gone through in life? What made it hard? How did you get through it?

Scripture: 1 Samuel 17:1-52

So, the Philistines invade Israel, and Israel goes out to defend the country. They’re getting ready to battle and then, out of the Philistine camp, steps this guy who is nine feet tall, wearing a suit of armor that weighed 125 pounds, and carrying a spear and a shield. That’s a big problem, isn’t it? How would you like to face him?

Is David afraid of Goliath? Why not?

David isn’t afraid because he knows that God is on the side of the Israelites. If Goliath attacks someone, David has faith that God will be with that person, so Goliath won’t be fighting only an Israelite but fighting an Israelite and God, which means that Goliath is not going to win.

The difference between David and the rest of the Israelites is that David has faith that God is going to help defeat Goliath. The other Israelites don’t think God will help and so, they’re just afraid.

Does King Saul think David can defeat Goliath? (No.)

Has anyone ever made you feel that you couldn’t do something, that you weren’t able or good enough to do it?

David says that he can defeat Goliath because God will help him. Don’t ever let someone tell you can’t do something, because even if you can’t do it, God can help you, and together, you and God can accomplish anything. Whatever the situation, whatever the problem, you and God can take care of it. You might be facing an impossible problem, just like it seemed impossible to defeat the giant Goliath, but it’s no problem to God. God is infinitely bigger than any problem we will ever face, and because we have God in our corner, we don’t have to worry about anything. If God is with us, nothing can defeat us.

Saul tried to give David some armor, but he couldn’t wear it. Instead, he took the things he was used to, his staff and sling. Sometimes, people think they need more money or things or something else to solve their problems, but David didn’t need anything more than what he already had.

You don’t need anything other than what you already have. The talents, the gifts, the personality, and the resources that God has given you are enough. You don’t need anything else for God to help you with any situation that comes up. You have God, and that means that He’s already given you everything you need.

Don’t be afraid of anything. Don’t let people tell you that you can’t do it. Because God is in your corner, and He can help you overcome anything.
