Children’s Sermon on Romans 6 - Dying and Living with Jesus

Children’s Sermon on Romans 6 - Dying and Living with Jesus

Use this children’s sermon about Romans 6 to illustrate to children how we die and live with Christ.

Scripture: Romans 6

Needed: a cutout picture of Jesus and a cutout picture of a child (included below)

Children’s Sermon: Hold up your picture of Jesus and ask, Does anyone know who this is? (Jesus!)

Who can tell me something Jesus did?

Jesus did a lot of miracles and taught us God’s way, but today, we want to talk about Jesus’ death and resurrection. Why did Jesus die?

Jesus died to take the punishment for our sins, all the wrong things we do. (Lay Jesus down.) But in our Bible passage today, the Apostle Paul tell us that, in a way, we also die with Jesus.

(Show your cutout child). This is Johnny. Johnny believes in Jesus. Because Johnny believes in Jesus, a part of Johnny dies. What do you think dies in Johnny when he believes in Jesus?

The part of Johnny that wants to do bad things dies. (Lay Johnny down.) We call that part in us that makes us want to do bad things the sinful nature. It makes us want to sin.

So, now, Jesus died to take the punishment for Johnny’s sins and the part inside Johnny that wants to sin is dead too. But what happened after Jesus died?

He came back to life! (Raise Jesus back up.) And the same thing happens to us. When we die to our sinful nature, God gives us new life and new power through His Spirit living in us to do the right things He wants us to do. (Raise Johnny back up.)

The Apostle Paul explains…

(Read Romans 6:8-10.)

“Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.”

So, we die with Jesus to let our sinful natures die – we don’t want to do wrong things anymore – and we come back to new life and want to do the right things and serve God.

Closing Prayer: Lord Jesus, we thank You for dying to take the punishment for all the wrong things we do. Help us to believe in You so that our old sinful natures will die and we won’t want to sin against You. Give us new life in You so that we can serve You in pure righteousness. Amen.
