Children’s Sermon on Romans 7 – How Do We Know the Rules?

Children’s Sermon on Romans 7 – How Do We Know the Rules?

Use this children’s sermon on Romans 7 to teach kids the purpose of God’s commands.

Scripture: Romans 7

Needed: a list of the Ten Commandments (included)

Children’s Sermon: Ask students, How many of you have rules in your house?

How do you know what the rules are?

Would you know the rules if no one ever told you?

Is it always easy to follow the rules in your house?

It wasn’t always easy for me to follow the rules in my house. And it’s not always easy for me to follow God’s rules either!

But God does give us rules, doesn’t He? Here’s a list of the Ten Commandments, God’s most famous rules. (Show your list and read through it.)

God gave us His rules so that we would know what He wants us to do and what He doesn’t want us to do. But in our Bible passage today, the Apostle Paul tells us it’s not always easy to follow God’s rules, even after we become one of God’s people.

(Read Romans 7:21-23, quoted here in the NIV.)

“So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me.”

Paul is saying God has changed his heart so that he wants to follow God’s rules, but his sinful nature still makes him wants to do bad things. He has a war going on inside between his heart and his sinful nature. Have you ever felt that war inside of you – when you want to follow the rules but you also want to break the rules?

We all have that war inside us, and part of following God is to keep fighting our sinful nature and trying to always do the right things God want us to.

Closing Prayer: Father God, we have a war going on inside us. We need You to help us win that war every time we’re tempted. Please give us the strength to do what is right so that we can show You we love You and want to be Your people. In Jesus’ name and through the power of the Holy Spirit we pray. Amen.
