Children’s Sermon on John 1:35-51 – Spending Time with Jesus

Children’s Sermon on John 1:35-51 – Spending Time with Jesus

Use this children’s sermon on the calling of the first disciples to show children how important it is to spend time with the Lord.

Scripture: John 1:35-51

Needed: a cutout picture of Jesus and a cutout picture of a child (included below)

Children’s Sermon: Say, I want you to close your eyes and think of spending time with your mom. Remember some of the times you’ve spent together, just you and your mom.

Okay, open your eyes. What are some things you like to do to spend time with your mom?

Now, close your eyes again and think of spending time with your dad, just the two of you. Open your eyes and tell me what you like to do to spend time with your dad.

In our Bible story today, two of John the Baptist’s disciples met Jesus and the first thing they did when they met Jesus was to go spend the day with Him. They wanted to learn from Jesus, and they knew they couldn’t learn from Him unless they spent time with Him.

(Show your picture of the cutout child).

This is Johnny. Johnny believes in Jesus (show your cutout picture of Jesus).

Johnny believes in Jesus just like those first two disciples did and I think just like all of you believe in Jesus. Johnny wants to spend time with Jesus, but Jesus isn’t on Earth anymore – He went back up to Heaven - so, Johnny can’t go spend the day with Jesus like the first two disciples did. So, if Jesus isn’t with us on Earth, what do you think are some ways Johnny can spend time with Jesus?

Johnny could pray and listen for Jesus to answer him in his heart. He could read the Bible and listen to what Jesus wants to tell him. He could listen to worship music or sing to Jesus. He could go for a walk and think and talk to Jesus.

The more time Johnny spends with Jesus, the better Johnny will get to know Jesus. It’s the same way with us. If we want to know Jesus, we need to spend time with Him. In fact, getting to know Jesus is the best way to use our time. We like to do other things, like going outside to play or reading books or playing games, but doing those things aren’t as important as spending time with Jesus. The best use of our time – and something we should do every day – is spend time getting to know Jesus.

Closing Prayer: Jesus, we thank You that You are always available to spend time with us. We pray You would help us to spend quality time with You. Help us to want to know You better. Amen.
