Praying through the Bible with Lindsey - Genesis 6

Read the Bible passage, then see the following prayer to take inspiration on how you might pray through this Scripture.

Genesis 6

(English Standard Version)

Increasing Corruption on Earth

When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.

The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

Noah and the Flood

These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God. 10 And Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11 Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. 13 And God said to Noah, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth. 14 Make yourself an ark of gopher wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. 15 This is how you are to make it: the length of the ark 300 cubits, its breadth 50 cubits, and its height 30 cubits. 16 Make a roof for the ark, and finish it to a cubit above, and set the door of the ark in its side. Make it with lower, second, and third decks. 17 For behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life under heaven. Everything that is on the earth shall die. 18 But I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you. 19 And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every sort into the ark to keep them alive with you. They shall be male and female. 20 Of the birds according to their kinds, and of the animals according to their kinds, of every creeping thing of the ground, according to its kind, two of every sort shall come in to you to keep them alive. 21 Also take with you every sort of food that is eaten, and store it up. It shall serve as food for you and for them.” 22 Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him.

Prayer for Genesis 6

Lord,

1-2) With every generation, there seems to be more and more evil. The people in our world seek whatever pleasures them without thought for their neighbors. They take what they want when they want it:-life, possessions, pieces of our hearts. They remind us how broken this world is.

3-6) How long will evil exist in this world? How long will You allow sin to break our hearts? How long must we keep participating in sin ourselves? I know You see our hearts. I know You are aware of the evil in this world. I know You are grieved.

7) Most importantly, I know You have not left us without hope. You have an incredible plan for this broken world.

8-10) Thank You so much for sending Your blameless and righteous Son for us to fix our sin. You’ve made a way for us to walk in His righteousness. You’ve adopted us as Your children! How could we express enough gratitude?!

11-16) We do have to live in a corrupt world full of violence, but we don’t have to live without Your hope. In my discouragement, remind me You have a plan to protect us from the consequences of evil. You have made me a fortress in Your Son to run to so that I can experience  peace and safety from temptation and corruption. Thank You! I’m grateful for the community of believers around me, Your Word on my shelves, and Your Spirit in me.

17-18) When You allow me to undergo the trials of this awful world and I feel crushed under its weight, I can run to Your Word and remember Your promises. I can seek wise counsel from  my brothers and sisters who believe in You. I can depend on Your Spirit to pray for me when I can’t pray myself.

19-22) Help me to gather other believers so that we may make this world shine with Your glory. May there always be enough believers to uphold Your truth. Bring people to me who I can disciple. Help me expand Your kingdom! I want to obey You and make disciples. Help me to store up Your living water so that I may never run out and forget Your truth. I want to take in Your Word and let it sustain me. I need abundant faith so that I may have faith when my brothers and sisters can’t. I need You in abundance, Lord. I want to obey You and glorify You! I want to take part in Your plan to stop the evil and corruption. I want to bring heaven to earth!
