Romans 9:1-4 Devotional by Steve Wilson

Who Would You Stop Being a Christian For?

Romans 9:1-4

I speak the truth in Christ—I am not lying, my conscience confirms it through the Holy Spirit— I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my people, those of my own race, the people of Israel.

Paul is saying he loves his people so much that He would be willing to stop enjoying the fellowship of Christ, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and the favor of God – he would be willing to go to Hell – if it meant Israel would be saved. That sounds like Jesus, doesn’t it? Paul had grown so close to Jesus that like our Lord, he was willing to sacrifice himself for others.

Do you have that kind of love for other people? Would you take someone’s place in Hell for all eternity?

Thankfully, God isn’t calling us to do that, but He does call us to sacrifice for others. Ask Him how He wants you to spend your time and money sharing the news of Christ’s salvation. Ask Him who He wants you to speak to. May He give you “great sorrow and unceasing anguish” for those who are not reconciled to God.
