Exodus 5 Devotional Bible Study

Genesis 5 Devotional Bible Study

Genesis 5 Chapter Summary

Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and told him God commanded him to let the Israelites leave and celebrate a festival to Him in the wilderness.

Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go?

I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.”

- Exodus 5:2

Pharaoh then told the slave drivers to work the people harder. Then the Israelites blamed Moses and Aaron, saying,

“May the Lord look on you and judge you!

You have made us obnoxious to Pharaoh and his officials

and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.”

- Exodus 5:21

Moses then blamed God for bringing trouble on the people instead of helping them.

It Gets Harder Before It Gets Better

It seems Moses and the Israelites thought God would deliver them right away. They didn’t foresee Pharaoh increasing their workload by not giving them straw for the bricks they were supposed to make.

But we know the end of the story, don’t we? We know that God acted powerfully and eventually brought the Israelites out of slavery. What we don’t know is how long it took. How many days or weeks or months or years passed between each plague? How long did the Israelites have to keep slaving for Pharaoh from the time Moses announced their deliverance until it finally happened?

You see the point, don’t you? God has made us promises. God will keep His promises. But we have to wait and endure, and many times, things will get worse for us before they get better. Don’t let that discourage you. Expect it. Know that it’s part of the pattern. Keep believing. Keep hoping. One day, you will see the Promised Land.
