Exodus 15 Devotional Bible Study
Exodus 15 Chapter Summary
Moses and the Israelites sang a song of praise to God for rescuing them. The song calls the wind that parted the waters God’s breath and says all the surrounding nations will hear what God did and be afraid to attack the Israelites as they pass through their lands to Canaan.
The Israelites traveled in the Desert of Shur without finding water. At Marah, the water was bitter, so they couldn’t drink it. But God showed Moses a piece of wood. When Moses threw the wood into the water, the water became drinkable. God told the people that if they obeyed Him, He would not bring on the Israelites any of the diseases He brought on the Egyptians.
Who is the LORD?
How is the Lord described in this song?
- He is highly exalted, worthy of praise, majestic, awesome in glory
- There is no one like Him
- He has defeated His enemies and saved His people with His great power
- He has been faithful through the generations
- He becomes angry, but His love doesn’t fail and He will lead His people to the Promised Land
- He will reign forever and ever
- This is still the God we serve today.
Who Are You Grumbling Against?
Exodus 15:22-24
Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert of Shur. For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water. When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter. (That is why the place is called Marah.) So the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?”
God used Moses to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. God appointed Moses to be their leader. But how far does the responsibility of a leader go? The people are grumbling against Moses here, but can Moses give them water? Is it his responsibility to meet all of their daily needs?
I think sometimes we hold our leaders to a standard that’s too high for them. We expect more from them than we should. So, here’s the question, Who are you grumbling against? Do they deserve it? Are they responsible for you?
If, Then
Exodus 15:26
The Lord said, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.”
This is an If, Then statement, isn’t it? If we will obey God, He won’t punish us like He punished the Egyptians. What happens if we don’t fulfill our part? What happens if our nations don’t fulfill their parts? We find ourselves in the situation we’re now in, don’t we?
Let us repent for our failings and pray that others will repent also. We may not have long before the Lord begins His final punishment on this world, yet some can still be saved.
