Bible Study on The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair (BBC)

The Chronicles of Narnia:

The Silver Chair

(British Broadcasting Company Movie Edition)

The Chronicles of Narnia (The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe / Prince Caspian & The Voyage of the Dawn Treader / The Silver Chair) BBC Version

Authorship: The Chronicles of Narnia were written by C.S. Lewis, a Christian English professor at Oxford College in England. The first volume was published in 1950 and was a story meant to remind us of the greatest story of all, the Bible.

Setting: 1942, England, during World War Two: sixty years later in Narnia since the sailing of the Dawn Treader

Discussion Points
*(0:10:00) Eustace and Jill entered Narnia after praying to Aslan. But Aslan tells Jills, “You would not have called to me if I had not been calling to you.” What does this mean?

A lot of times, we have this idea that we are in control of our relationship with God. If I pray to God, then God will answer me. If I ask God to forgive my sins, then He will do so. You see, we like to think that we are in control. But God is not Somebody that we can control, is He? Let’s see what Scripture says about who controls the relationship.

See John 15:16

We think that we can choose to believe in God when we decide that we’re ready to do that. But that isn’t what this verse is saying. It says that we do not choose God like it’s our own idea. God chooses us first and invites us to believe in Him.

See Ephesians 1:4-6

God chose to offer us salvation before the creation of the world. That was His plan for us.

See 1 John 4:19

The only way that we can love God or choose to follow God or pray to God is because He first loved and reached out to us. Let’s look at again at what Jesus says in John 15:16.

See John 15:16

What happens after God chooses us? He appoints us to go and bear fruit. What does that mean? It means that God gives us a job to do. He assigns us a task. Just like when Aslan called Eustace and Jill to Narnia. He didn’t call them just for the fun of it. He called them to perform a task. God gives each of us tasks. The task that God gives us is different for everybody. What are some of the tasks that God gives people to do? To tell other people about Jesus, to be pastors, to be teachers, to be missionaries, to be really good parents, to serve the Church in various ways, to live the kind of life that pleases God.

*(0:34:00) The owls reveal who the enemy is in this situation. We saw a flashback of a serpent or a snake, who killed the queen. And then the snake turned into the Green Lady, a witch, and did something to Prince Rilian. Does the idea of a snake being the enemy remind you of anything in the Bible?

See Genesis 3:1-5

The snake tempts Eve to disobey God. The snake is Adam and Eve’s enemy. Who do you think that snake was?

See Revelation 12:9

The devil, or Satan, is described as a serpent, or a snake.

See John 8:44

Jesus is talking to the Pharisees in this verse. What does He say the devil is like?

The devil is a murderer and a liar. We see that in the movie. The serpent or the green lady kills the queen and lies to the prince. We’ll see just how much she lies later in the movie. The thing that we need to understand is that the devil lies to us. He does nothing but lie to us, and the thing that he wants most is to kill us, not just physically, but spiritually as well.

And the devil is tricky. Just like the serpent turned into the Green Lady, the devil will try to make himself look better to us than he is.

See 2 Corinthians 11:14

*(0:45:00) How would you describe Puddleglum? Puddleglum is a very negative person. He never looks on the bright side. He never has any hope. Is this the way Christians are supposed to act?

See Joshua 1:9

Knowing that God is with us gives us hope.

See 1 Timothy 4:9-10

Romans 8:28

Because we know that God will eventually bring everything around for our good, we can have hope. Hope is simply the idea that we can look forward to something better happening in the future. The Bible tells us what our ultimate future will be; Heaven. Therefore, anyone who believes in God can have hope as they look forward to spending eternity with God and being happy forever in Heaven.

*(1:20:00) Jill was doing pretty good remembering what Aslan told her, but the group got distracted by how cold they were and how much they wanted to get to the city to have a nice bath and a nice bed and good food. Because Jill forgot to recite Aslan’s words, they got themselves into a bad situation. They were tricked. I suspect that we’re like that a lot of times. We let the devil trick us because we haven’t been spending enough time remembering what God has said to us. If we don’t spend enough time reading and studying the Bible, it will be easy for the devil to distract us from God and what God wants us to do.

See 1 Peter 5:8

Genesis 4:7

The devil is an enemy that will try to attack us whenever he has the opportunity. We have to be ready for his attacks. When he attacks us, with temptation, or depression, or a bad attitude, we have to be able to defend ourselves. The way that we do that is by knowing God’s word.

See Psalm 119:105

What does a lamp or a light do? It keeps us safe so that we can see where we’re going and so that we don’t bang into things and hurt ourselves, so we don’t get lost. That’s what the Bible does for us. It helps us to see where we’re going and where we should be going. It protects us by helping us to see all the dangerous things that the devil has put in our way.

See Psalm 119:9-16

Let me pull out a couple of things from this passage. “How can a young person keep their way pure? By living according to God’s word.” Hiding it in their heart. What does that mean? Memorizing it. Reading and studying the Bible so that you know so it well, it is a part of you. It is inside you. Not neglecting God’s word. Neglect means to not spend enough time with it. I bet that most of us in this room neglect God’s word. I bet that most of us in this room do not spend enough time with it as we should.

*(2:10:00) Jill, Eustace, and Puddleglum knew what Aslan had told them to do. They were supposed to obey whoever asked them to do something in Aslan’s name. But when somebody did ask them to do something in Aslan’s name, they were unsure whether they should do it or not. If they let the prince go, they would be taking a risk. They had to decide whether they would trust what Aslan had said or not. Either they would have faith or they wouldn’t. We’re faced with the same situation. Either we’re going to believe and act on what God has said, or we’re not. Either we’re going to have faith, or we’re not. And just like it was scary for Jill and Eustace and Puddleglum to have faith, sometimes it’s scary for us to have faith. It’s a risk. But here’s how we can trust God what God has told us. How does God tell us things today? Through the Bible and through the Holy Spirit.

See 2 Timothy 3:16-17

2 Peter 1:20-21

We know that we can believe the Bible because it is from God. And not only is the Bible from God, but it also has a purpose. God doesn’t just say things for the fun of it. He has a reason for everything that He has told us in the Bible.

See Isaiah 55:10-11

God has a purpose for everything that He says. And because God has promised that His word will accomplish His desires, we can trust what God has told us. Sometimes it doesn’t make sense to us, just like it didn’t make it sense to Jill and Eustace and Puddleglum – sometimes it means taking a risk, but we have to trust God.

See Proverbs 3:5-6

If we trust in God and not in what we think about something, God will make everything turn out okay in the end.

See 2 Samuel 22:31-33

God’s way is perfect, and His word is flawless. If we trust in God and what He has told us, He will give us the strength to do what we have to do. Even though it’s taking a risk, God will give us the courage to do it.

We’ve been talking about trusting what God has told us in the Bible. But there’s also another way that God speaks to us. God speaks to each one of us through the Holy Spirit that lives inside of us.

See John 14: 26

The Holy Spirit teaches us. We have to learn to trust what God says to us through the Spirit. We have to learn to listen for the Spirit. He’s always talking, but we need to learn to listen so that we can hear Him.

See John 13:17

Setting 1940, England, just prior to World War Two

Discussion Points

* (0:3:30) “The servants will take these [luggage]. That is their function. One must not deprive people of their function. Everyone has their part to play.”

People do not now, nor have they ever, seen servants in a very esteemed light. We view servants as being of a lower status than those whom they serve. We don’t want to serve. We want to be served. But, as Christians, we understand that one type of person or one type of job is not really more important than another, that we need everyone and every type of role to function to our fullest capacity.

See 1 Corinthians 12:4-7, 12-21

Christians should also understand what it means to take the nature of a servant:

Jesus’ disciples had been arguing about which one of them deserved the most respect and authority.

See Matthew 20:25-28

John 13:1-5, 12-15

Just as Jesus, the God of the whole universe, takes it upon Himself to serve us and to die for us, so we also should follow His example and be willing to serve each other. Those who serve others are most like Jesus.

* (0:11:00) Tumnus calls Lucy a “daughter of Eve” because she is a human. When God created the earth, He made one man.

See Genesis 2:7, 18, 21-22, and Genesis 3:20

God then made Adam a woman, named Eve, to be his wife. From these two people, came all the humans that are alive today. We’re all one big family, with our great-great…grandparents being Adam and Eve.

* (0:16:00) Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy are sent into the boring country to live with a boring old professor in a boring old house. But, as we come to find out, things are not at all what they seem. As soon as Lucy discovers the passage into Narnia, her life goes from being boring to being exciting, from ordinary to magical. We can see this same kind of change in our own lives. We see the world around us and assume that this is all that there is. But, as Christians, we know that there is much more to life than just what we can see with our eyes and touch with our hands. There is another side of life, the spiritual side, that we can enter, that can change our lives to make them more exciting, more adventurous, more fulfilling. Just as the children entered into Narnia, so God invites us into this spiritual side of life:

See John 7:24

Things are not always as they appear.

See 1 Corinthians 2:7-9

This spiritual life has been hidden from us before, but now we can enter into it. Some people do not understand it, but now we can, and if we are willing to enter into this spiritual life with God, God promises that it will be more incredible than anything that we could ever imagine. Jesus says in John 10:10 – “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

* (0:20:45) Mr. Tumnus pretended to be Lucy’s friend because he was working for the White Witch. But then Mr. Tumnus had a change of heart. He was sorry that he had been working for the White Witch and turned away from the wrong that he had to serve her. The Bible says that we’re all like Mr. Tumnus before we come to know Jesus.

See 1 Corinthians 6:16

Matthew 12:30

We can work for sin or we can work for God, we can be slaves to sin or we can be slaves to God, we can be with Jesus, or we can be against Jesus. Before we come to know Jesus, we’re all slaves to sin, working for the devil, against Jesus. But when we realize our sin, God gives us the opportunity to feel sorry for it and to turn away from it (repent).

See 1 Corinthians 7:10

* (0:25:30)The first thing that Lucy does when she gets back from her visit to Narnia is to try to tell the other children what she has experienced. Of course, the other three children, not having experienced what she has, do not believe her and even make fun of her. Lucy gets frustrated that they do not believe her, but she knows what she has seen, and she sticks to the truth of her experience. After we have experienced the spiritual side of life, the first thing that we want to do is invite others to share that experience with us, but many people do not believe it when we tell them about it. The only thing that we can do is to hold firmly to the truth that we have experienced and to pray for and keep talking to those people who don’t believe us.

See Matthew 5:10-12, 44

*(0:38:10)Edmund, after finding himself in Narnia, comes face to face with the White Witch. She acts nicely toward him, offers him things, pretends to be his friend, but the Witch also demands that Edmund do certain things for her and it is obvious that the Witch does not really care for Edmund.

See 2 Corinthians 11:14

Just as the Witch acted nicely toward Edmund, so Satan can pretend to be an angel. The devil acts friendly toward us and tells us what we want to hear, but that doesn’t mean that we can believe him.

See John 8:44

He only acts friendly toward us and lies to us so that we’ll do what he wants us to do.

Just as the White Witch offered Edmund to be king of Narnia, so the devil tempted Jesus.

See Luke 4:5-8

Satan can offer us Turkish Delight or kingdoms, power or money, but it’s not worth it. It won’t last. The only thing that matters is worshipping God.

See Mark 8:36

Have you ever wondered why the White Witch is so White? She’s pale. When do people get really pale? When they’re sick or dead. The White Witch is dead. She is dead spiritually. She has no life in her.

*(0:46:30)The professor says that nothing is more probable than that other worlds exist. Do you think it’s probable that other worlds with life exist? Do you think God created other planets to have life on them? If God is infinite, why limit Himself to just earth? If God created millions of different kinds of animals on this planet, why not create a few more somewhere else? If God created black and tan and white and red and yellow people here, why wouldn’t He create blue people somewhere else? Just something to think about.

*(1:10:00)The Beavers begin to describe Aslan to the children. They say that He is a lion. In the Bible, God is referred to as being a Lion.

See Revelation 5:5

Hosea 5:14-15

What are some of the reasons you think the Bible would call God a Lion? What does a lion have in common with God? Strength, power, etc.

The movie also says that people should be afraid of Aslan, afraid of God. Why do you think people are or should be afraid of God? He’s strong enough to hurt you. He can discipline you.

The third thing that the Beavers say about Aslan is that He’s not safe. He is not tame. Neither can we tame God. God is in control of us, not us in control of God. Neither is God safe. Sometimes God has to hurt us so that He can help us. Sometimes God makes us give up a sin, something wrong that we’re doing, something that we don’t want to give up, something that might hurt to give up so that we can be better people. Sometimes God takes away a friend or a member of a family so that we can learn to trust Him better.

*(1:21:00)Notice how Edmund’s conscience keeps warning him, keeps telling him that what he is doing is wrong. Does your conscience ever speak to you? Do you listen to it? If you don’t, you’ll probably end up in trouble like Edmund’s about to. God gives us our conscience to help us.

*(1:46:00)Why do you think it was always winter in Narnia when the White Witch was in control?

See Romans 8:19-22

The Bible says that the whole creation is frustrated, is in bondage to decay, is groaning in the pains of childbirth.

Genesis 3:17-18 tells us why.

The ground never used to be cursed. It never produced thorns and thistles before. But what happened? Adam and Eve sinned. And because Adam and Eve brought sin into the world, the whole world suffers for it.

Did you know that animals never used to eat each other until Adam and Eve sinned? The Bible says that the animal kingdom will have peace again in Heaven.

See Isaiah 11:6-9

*(1:48:30)When we first see Aslan, He has some pretty strange-looking animals with Him. God also has pretty strange-looking creatures that are with him.

See Ezekiel 1:4-14

Revelation 4:6-8

*(2:19:00)Traitors are the rightful property of the Queen. Our parallel is that all sinners are the rightful property of the devil. Alsan does not deny this. God knows that all sinners, anyone who has ever done anything wrong, go to the devil. The consequence of our sin is being put to death.

See Genesis 2:15-17

Genesis 3:17-19

Did you know that before Adam and Eve sinned, they would never have to die? They only died because they did what God told them not to do. That was the consequence. Now we all return to the dust from which we were made.

See Romans 6:21-23

Death is the consequence of our sin. But this verse says that even though we have sinned, God gives us the gift of eternal life in Jesus Christ. If we believe in Jesus, we don’t have to die.

*Just as Edmund was afraid when the Witch demanded his blood, so are we afraid when the devil comes to take us. But did you notice how Edmund kept looking toward Aslan for help, to protect him from the Witch? So we look to God to save us from the devil.

See Psalm 105:4

2 Samuel 22:2-3

God is the One who saves us, which is what Aslan did for Edmund. Edmund sinned, and the consequence of that was that he had to die. But Aslan made a deal with the Witch. He traded Himself for Edmund. Instead of Edmund being put to death, Alsan died in his place. It’s just like when we sin, we have to die, but God, in his mercy, allows us to make a trade. In the Old Testament, when someone sinned, they had to bring an animal to the priest and have it put to death. They had to make a sacrifice. The animal died so that the person didn’t have to yet. When Jesus died on the cross, He became our sacrifice. Instead of us being put to death for our sins, Jesus allowed Himself to be put to death in our place.

*Just like Aslan was sad about what He had to do, so was Jesus. And just as Aslan was happy to have Susan and Lucy with Him for part of the way, so Jesus took some of his friends with Him to keep Him company.

See Matthew 26:36-38

*Just as Aslan did not resist or try to argue when the monsters were killing Him, neither did Jesus try to stop His death.

See Isaiah 53:7

*And as Aslan died for Edmund, so Jesus died for all of us.

See Isaiah 53:5

1 John 2:2

Colossians 1:13-14

*But not only does Jesus give us forgiveness for our sins; He has also defeated the concept of death itself so that, just as Jesus could not stay dead, neither will we stay dead.

See 1 Corinthians 15:3-8

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

1 Corinthians 15:50-58

*(2:26:30)Aslan’s breath brings the statues back to life. This reminds us of how God breathed into the first human being to bring him to life.

See Genesis 2:7

* (2:31:30) As the forces of good battle the forces of evil, we have to remember that we are also fighting every day.

See Ephesians 6:10-18

*(2:34:30) Now that Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy are the kings and queens of Narnia, the prophecy has been fulfilled. God gives us many prophecies in the Bible, some of which have already been fulfilled, like the coming of Jesus, but some have not yet happened. Why do you think God gives us prophecies?

See Amos 3:7-8

John 14:29

God tells us what He is going to happen so that when it happens we can see it and will believe in Him because He obviously knew what He was talking about and the power to make things happen the way that He wanted them to happen.

Discussion Points
*(0:12:00) Most people in Narnia did not believe in the old stories about Aslan and the history of the royal children. Most people thought that they were just myths and fairytales. Did you know that most people today believe that our stories about God are just myths?, that most people today think that the Bible is just make-believe? What are some of the reasons why you think people don’t believe the Bible is true?

Open your Bible to any random page in the Old Testament or the Gospels. Try to find a page that doesn’t give a name of a place or a year. The Bible is very detailed in geography and time frame. This tells us that the Bible was written to be a history book for us, a history of what God has done for His people and us. God and the people who wrote the Bible want us to know that this is a true story. These things really happened. They’re not just myths. All those boring parts where it says, “This guy begat this guy,” is to tell us that we’re reading real history.

Okay. So we can read about what God did in the past, but it’s still hard to believe it actually happened. It’s hard to imagine God flooding the whole world or parting the Red Sea. The people in the Bible actually saw that stuff, but we didn’t. They have an advantage over us, right? That’s where faith comes in.

See John 20:29

Hebrews 11:1

2 Corinthians 5:7

*(0:31:00) Lucy says she saw Aslan. But it was only for a moment. Then the rest of the children see Him, but Peter says that it’s tricky in this light to really see Him clearly. Just like it was hard for the children in the movie to see Aslan, it’s hard for us to see God while we’re here on earth.

See 1 Corinthians 13:12

We can’t see everything that we want to see now. We can’t always see God. It’s like we’re looking through a really dirty window. Sometimes we can make something out, but most of the time it’s just too hard to see through the dirt. But if we keep looking, we will catch glimpses of God from time to time.

See Matthew 7:7-8

Jesus promises that if you seek for God, you will find Him.

See Jeremiah 29:11-13

But we’re not talking about just some ho-hum casual seeking. If you want to see God, you have to seek with all your heart. And here it tells us one of the ways to seek. It says that if we pray, God will hear us. Prayer is one way to seek God.

See 1 Chronicles 15:1-3

The second way to seek God is by reading the Bible. This verse tells us that the people of Israel did not know God for a long time because they weren’t reading His Word. God gave us the Bible for a reason. The Bible is where God chooses to show Himself to us. The Bible is the place where God wants us to seek for Him.

If we want to see God, if you want to find Him, look for Him in the Bible and pray to Him, and He promises that you will find Him.

*(1:05:00) Eustace’s tongue gets him in trouble, doesn’t it? He has a bad attitude and makes a lot of nasty comments. He even openly insults people! Of course, we don’t always watch what we say as much as we should do we? It’s hard to control what we say!

See James 3:3-12

Our mouths have a way of running away with us, don’t they? We find ourselves lying, insulting people, backtalking, gossiping, telling dirty jokes, cursing. We do all of these things, and then, we say that we believe in God! As Christians, we need to really try to control what we say.

See James 1:26

If we’re saying things that we shouldn’t then the Bible tells us that we’re not taking our religion seriously enough. Religion has to make a difference in our lives. If it doesn’t, then we don’t really have religion. What we believe has to affect what we say.

See Psalm 15:1-3

One of the things that will make us acceptable to God is watching what we say. This passage tells us that God will be pleased with people who speak the truth, that God will be pleased with people who don’t gossip, that God will be pleased with people who don’t insult others.

*(1:35:00) Eustace has been selfish from the moment we met him. Along with being selfish, he’s also greedy, isn’t he? He sees something that he wants, and he wants to keep it all to himself. Let’s see what the Bible has to say about selfishness and being greedy.

See Luke 12:13-34

These verses tell us that although people want to have a lot of money and want to have a lot of nice stuff, that isn’t what matters in life. Being rich toward God is what matters, right? Because God will provide us with everything that we need if we trust in Him. Not only will He give us food and clothes, but He’ll also give us the Kingdom of Heaven if we believe in Him. So money and stuff in this life don’t matter. Jesus says that where our treasure is, that’s where our heart is. What is your treasure? Is it your cell phone, your iPod, your CDs, your video games, your clothes? If those types of things are what you value most, then your heart is not going to be right with God. But if what you value most is spending time with God and reading the Bible and praying and doing things that please Him, then your heart will someday be in Heaven with God. People in this world care way too much about things and not enough about God and other people. The Bible tells us to give and give, not want more and more.

See 1 Timothy 6:7-10

When we want more and more money or things, we make money or things our idol. We let money or things distract us from God and the things that really matter.

When Eustace allowed himself to be tempted by greed, he was turned into a dragon, wasn’t he? He was turned into an ugly monster. What do you think happens to us when we sin? People who are selfish and greedy and sin all the time have ugly personalities, don’t they? Next week we’ll see how Eustace and we can be healed from our sin.

*(1:52:00) Eustace was turned into a monster because his soul was ugly and sinful. He was selfish and greedy, and a curse caused him to appear on the outside what he looked like on the inside. Eustace’s personality shows us that he was definitely someone without God in his life, right? He was lost. But what did Aslan do for Eustace? Did Eustace go try to find Aslan or did Aslan come to find Eustace? Aslan came to find Eustace, right? Close your eyes and listen as I read to you.

See Luke 15:3-7 and Luke 19:10

Okay, open your eyes again. You see, there was a point in our lives, when we, like Eustace, were lost from God. But Jesus came to find us, just like Aslan came to find Eustace. We weren’t lost in the sense that Jesus didn’t know where we were. God always knows where we are, right? He knows everything about us. But we were lost in the sense that we didn’t know what road or path in life to take to lead us to Heaven. Jesus knew where we were, but we didn’t. We were just going along on our merry way, thinking that we were doing fine, but really we were so lost that we didn’t even realize that the path that we were on was leading us straight to Hell. We were so lost that we were heading away from God instead of to God and didn’t even know it.

We were trying to find our own on the road of life. We were trying to do things by ourselves. Just like Eustace was, right? When he was a dragon, he thought that he could fix his problem himself? Did you see him trying to claw his own skin off? But no matter what he did, he was powerless to help himself. Just like we are powerless to fix our own spiritual problems.

See Romans 5:6, 8

Aslan told Eustace that He would have to do it for him. And that’s the same way it is with us. We can’t fix our spiritual problem. We can’t get rid of our sin by ourselves. We can’t save ourselves. God has to do it for us.

See Ephesians 2:4-9

Close your eyes again. I want you to take a minute to think about God’s incredible to grace to you. That He sent His Son to come looking for you when you didn’t even know that you were lost. That He took away your sin when you were powerless to help yourself.

*(2:15:00) Aslan says that he calls all times soon. Remember that Aslan symbolizes God in this series. How can God call all times soon?

See 2 Peter 3:8

How can a day be like a thousand years? How can a thousand years be like a day?

God stands outside of time. God created time for us. Time does not matter to God. God lives in a place where there is no time. It is called eternity. God enters our time and our world from time to time, but He is also free to leave it and reenter it whenever He chooses.

*(2:45:00) Aslan appears here as a lamb and a lion. We know that God is like a lion because He’s strong and He’s the King. Just like the lion is the king of the jungle, God is the King of the Universe. But why do you think He appears here as a lamb?

See Exodus 12:21-23

During the exodus, God ordered His people to show their faithfulness to Him by sacrificing a lamb and putting the blood of it over their doorways. When God saw the blood of the lamb over His people, they were protected. Today, we still do the same thing to show that we are God’s people.

See John 1:29

Jesus has become our Lamb.

See Isaiah 53:7

When we have the blood of Jesus covering us, when we believe in the sacrifice that He made for us, we are identified as God’s people. We are protected from God’s punishment. The blood of Jesus, believing in Him, is the same as putting blood over our doorway in the time of the exodus.

*(2:45:00) Aslan says that there is a door to his country in our world and that we must learn the name that he has in our world. What do you think Aslan’s name is in our world? What do you think is the door to his country in our world?

Through our study, we have come to recognize that Aslan symbolizes God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit. The way that we get to God in our world is not by believing in a magical lion but by believing in the true story of Jesus Christ.
