"Using Our Tools" Children's Sermon on 2 Timothy 2:15
Use this children's sermon to teach kids about how to use their spiritual
identity positively.
Needed: A toolbox with tools
Open the toolbox and pull out a tool. Ask, What could someone do with this?
(Go through a couple of tools, discussing their use.)
What would happen if I used these tools the wrong way? What if I used
this hammer as a screwdriver, or this measuring tape as a hammer? Would
it work?
What if I used my tools to bonk someone on the head? Would that be using my tools correctly?
A good worker knows how to use his tools the right way. And the Bible tells us that God wants us be a good worker for Him.
(Read 2 Timothy 2:15, quoted here in the NIV.)
"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth."
As
Christians, we're workers with God. But we don't use just these kinds
of tools (from your toolbox) for God. What do you think are some other tools God has given
us to use for Him?
(Hold up a Bible.) We can use all
kinds of tools for God when we use things to help other people, but this
is the main tool God has given us to be a worker with Him.
And
just like we can do a lot of good if we use these tools the right way,
we can also do a lot of good if we use the Bible the right way. And just
like we can do bad things with the tools if we use them the wrong way,
we can also do bad things with the Bible if we use it the wrong way.
If
we use the Bible to learn about God and to make people feel good
because God loves them, that's using our tool of the Bible the right
way. But if we use the Bible to make people feel bad, that's using the
Bible the wrong way. So, remember, God always wants us to use the tool
of the Bible the right way.
Let's pray about that.
Sample
prayer: Father God, we thank You for giving us the Bible to be our main
tool as Your followers. We pray that You will help us to always respect
it and use it the right way, like You want us to. In Jesus' name we
pray. Amen.
