2 Samuel 21:7-8 Devotion by Stephen Taylor

2 Samuel 21:7-8

The king spared Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, because of the oath before the LORD between David and Jonathan, son of Saul. But the king took Armoni and Mephibosheth, the two sons of Aiah's daughter Rizpah, whom she had borne to Saul, together with the five sons of Saul's daughter Merab, whom she had borne to Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite.

The tale of two Mephibosheths. Same name, same family, different outcomes, but why? The entire Bible points to Jesus, and this story is no different. King David is a shadow of the King who would come later, that King being Jesus! So, what the Holy Spirit showed me here is we have two people, seemingly identical on the surface but who have one very important difference: one has a personal relationship with the King, and one does not!

I see the Gospel here in this story! Why was one spared and the other wasn’t? The only reason I can see that one Mephibosheth was spared and the other wasn’t is because one belonged to the King and the other didn't! It’s a picture of Jesus and us! We all deserve death and have no way to escape it except through Him!

Another thing the Spirit showed me is that the relationship started with the father(Jonathan) and then carried on to the son (Mephibosheth)! So, this tells me that our relationship with Christ can directly impact our children and those around us! The relationship that was formed with king David was generational, and so can our relationship with Christ be! We still have free will, and we still have a choice, but why not give our kids the best possible chance at success and root ourselves deeply in Christ and set the example?

If we want to see the change in those around us tomorrow, then we have to set the tone and surrender and serve Christ today! What we do and who we serve will impact the generations to come. Will you leave a legacy of faith or of fear? One founded on the Spirit or on sin? A child of God or a child of wrath? Let us do everything for the glory of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit!

Romans 14:7-8 - For none of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us dies for ourselves alone. If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.

God bless! I love you all! Glory, honor, and praise now and forever to Papa God, Jesus Christ our King, and the Holy Spirit!
